It took alot of convincing to get me to come into your alcohol rehab program. Between my parents, boyfriend and the counselors at the admission center I decided to give it a try. While I can't say it was easy, I can say it was the best decision I have ever made. My parents and boyfriend agree. I can return to Maryland with my head held up high. Thanks for everything.

- Robin W., Ohio

One drink always led to ten and when I couldn't drink any more I turned to cocaine. This combination landed me in the E.R. one night which was my motivation for recovery. Since completing Stepping Stone's alcohol recovery program I have not had a drink or drug; it has been seven months now and I still can't believe it.

- Miguel H., Texas

It has been 11 months, 21 hours and 22 minutes since my last drink and drug, but who's counting. I assure you it was no laughing matter when I came into Stepping Stone. I was completely depressed, my eating was out of control and I was drinking at least two bottles of wine a day, not to mention the cocaine use. Today, I am a responsible mother and wife but more importantly, I am a responsible recovering alcoholic. Thank you Stepping Stone

Alcoholism Prevention

Alcoholism Prevention

An alcoholism prevention plan is the most effective way of avoiding alcohol dependence and stopping alcohol abuse before it starts. If you have a suspicion that a loved one is starting to abuse alcohol, you must step in and help them take control of the situation. If treatment is avoided or you turn a blind eye toward their alcohol use, alcoholism will develop.

Alcohol Abuse Prevention and Early Detection

Alcoholism can target anyone at any time, from teenagers to hard-working adults. That's why it's better to have an alcohol abuse prevention plan in place before dependency occurs. However, if you suspect a loved one of abusing alcohol, there are some early detection signs to look out for:

  • Bloodshot eyes
  • Memory lapses
  • Slurred speech
  • Declining grades (if a student)
  • Lack of interest in previously enjoyed activities
  • Defensive behavior
  • Frequent mood changes

Initiating an Alcoholism Prevention Plan

When you initiate your alcoholism prevention plan, it should become an active and every day component of your life. It all begins with how you live your life. By setting a good example for your loved one, you can prove to them that alcohol is never the answer. Other ways of putting your alcoholism prevention plan into effect can include:

  • Keeping an open line of communication flowing between you and your loved one
  • Avoid purchasing alcohol products
  • Remove all alcohol products from the home
  • Explain to your loved one the serious complications that can arise due to alcoholism, including legal, health and financial-related problems
  • Explain the consequences to your loved one if they choose to use alcohol and be prepared to enforce them

Beyond Alcoholism Prevention - Finding Treatment

Unfortunately, although the legal drinking age is 21, it doesn't mean some teenagers won't start drinking. If they continue to drink large quantities, their tolerance level will increase and they will reach a point when they are abusing alcohol. If treatment is not administered in this phase, then there is a very high probability that alcoholism will develop.

Regardless of whether you or your teen is suffering from alcohol abuse or dependence, the fact remains that it can be treated. But, time is of the essence. The earlier the detox is performed and rehabilitation treatment provided, the better the chance is for a complete recovery.
